Known as the “Father of Modern Washington,” Alexander Robey “Boss” Shepherd was an influential civic leader in Washington, D.C.’s history. As Governor of the District of Columbia from 1873 to 1874, Shepherd oversaw the planting of more than 60,000 trees across the District. With his vision, he pioneered the city’s significant increase in green space, earning it the nickname the “City of Trees.”

The Boss Shepherd Society is an exclusive network of donors who have contributed major gifts of $5,000 or more. Members of the Boss Shepherd Society lead the way in strengthening the green legacy of our nation’s capital and its surrounding counties, ensuring that Washington, D.C. remains the “City of Trees” going forward.

Having lived in the Mars Area of Butler County, PA all her life, Susie grew up in the Mars Borough and then moved to Middlesex Township with her husband, John, in 1984. She earned a degree in Economics and Accounting from Edinboro University and coached the Mars Soccer Club for 12 years.

Susie learned to love the outdoors as a young child by spending time at her father's hunting camp in the Allegheny National Forest. It was here that she learned how to fish, and later at her grandmother's farm in Middlesex Township, she learned how to hunt as well. Her love of canoeing can be attributed to being a member of the Mars White Water Club in high school. Along with her husband, they have passed their love of canoeing, kayaking, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, scouting, and being good stewards of the environment onto their two adult children, Jessica and Luke.

In 2012, Susie joined the Glade Run Lake Conservancy (GRLC) where she coordinates many of the ongoing stewardship projects conducted by local boy scout troops. Susie is most proud of the Eagle Scout Bridge project which opened access to the north shore hiking trail.

ANNUAL GIVING

Membership with the Glade Run Lake Conservancy is open to anyone who supports the mission and values of the organization.

Annual membership dues are used to fund initiatives that promote and support the preservation of the Glade Run Lake watershed. This includes purchases of surrounding land and conservation easements that will increase the size of the current 125-acre park. Membership dues also fund projects that improve and enhance Glade Run Lake and its surrounding park land.

All members will receive a copy of our annual newsletter and notifications of special events throughout the year.
